In the 21st century, why would any company let IT dictate the selection of social software? That’d be foolish …

    Sam,
In a particularly good Forrester report, I quoted Laurie Heltsley, the Director of Computers and Communications Services at Proctor and Gamble, who told me that the very term “deploy” conjures up images of combat, which works against the idea of collaboration. So they don’t deploy software, they offer great solutions. Seemed like a subtle point at first. But it reflects a really thoughtful realization about collaboration and IT — one that is exactly in harmony with your depiction.

Any top-down approach is subject to the “We will make you work in this social software” problem. You could replace the IT guy in the picture on the left with a picture of your VP Marketing and it would have the same outcome.
